As the Taliban systematically destroy the country of Afghanistan and actively oppress half its population, I found myself imagining life for the women and girls there. ‘There but the grace of God’. Geography and politics have a lot to answer for, but with this collection, a small yellow fruit key to the country’s horticulture signifies the everyday lived experience of many people. I purposely kept Lemon Lady on a white background to enhance the solitary nature of her predicament. Her expression is fixed on a spot in the distant future.
I made this piece in 2022 out of anger and frustration. I used watercolour, acrylics, iridescent inks, and fineliner pen. Thank you to Paul Duffy of Duffy’s Dastardly Doodles for his advice on elements of this. 🍋🎨
My ‘Lemon Collection’ brings visibility to the 100 million invisible voice-less right-less displaced people forced to flee. Millions of refugees experience denied human rights in their efforts to escape war, hunger, and oppression on a scale I cannot even imagine. Please browse the other pieces in this series.
