I made this piece to acknowledge women and girls whose educations are denied. Lemons are a key part of the economy of Afghanistan, and when Taliban forces took control in 2021 oppressing the female population, I thought about the prospects of losing one’s living, education, and autonomy,
The faces of this farm-labouring mother and daughter are calm if tense. They walk slowly towards us as if to move away from the war that is taking over the farmland.
Books are hidden; lemons are falling through holes in the basket. A quiet desperation leads the mother to toss away the fruit she had so carefully harvested; as she does so, it transforms into a grenade.
I used watercolour, acrylics, and fineliner pen. This piece will shortly be available as prints in my store, but there is only one original 🍋🎨
My ‘Lemon Collection’ brings visibility to the 100 million invisible voice-less right-less displaced people forced to flee. Millions of refugees experience denied human rights in their efforts to escape war, hunger, and oppression on a scale I cannot even imagine. Please browse the other pieces in this series.
