The surreal vibe of this figurative piece shimmers with outrage. Mine, theirs, yours. ‘How Bloody Dare You’ shows a teenage girl on the left and her older countrywoman on the right. Refugees, they have only what they can carry. They experience hatred and attack for everything they are, and everything they need: food, shelter, education. Denied the right to be angry at their lot in life, they are expected to ‘put up and shut up’, to go without their basic needs including period products. They may be forced to hear the outrage of others but they persist with power, strength, and beauty.

I made this piece in 2022 using watercolour, acrylics, inks, pen, nail polish, and tea. Thank you to Paul Duffy of Duffy’s Dastardly Doodles for his advice on elements of this. 🍋🫖🎨

My Lemon collection brings visibility to the 100 million invisible voice-less right-less displaced people forced to flee. Millions of refugees experience denied human rights in their efforts to escape war, hunger, and oppression on a scale I cannot even imagine. Please browse the other pieces in this series.
